the one... with an afternoon in the sun

 

If you follow me over at Instagram you would have seen these pics.

It was a beautiful Sunday recently I was driving back across the bridge near home when I noticed the tide was out and saw lots of people out on the sand.  This is the perfect time to get out onto the bay with no fear of the tide or sharks getting you.

I got home and changed into a tee and shorts, grabbed the cap and packed a little bag for Charlie - yes I'm one of those puppy mums.

I drove back across the bridge and headed out onto the sand.

I'll admit there were a few squishy bits of sand that was sooo yucky under foot but once you got past that it was fine.

At one point I watched Charlie cross one section of water where it reached his tummy and I could see the look on his face that he wanted to turn around but couldn't quite make it with the current taking him (every so slowly) in the opposite direction - so I had to rescue the wet puppy!

I had such a nice afternoon wondering around and through the water - I'll be keeping my eye on the tide from now on.

the one... with the memories

I found myself going back through my Charlie photo folder recently and found this video - I hadn't seen it in ages and it still brings a smile to my face.

It was taken in the first month after I adopted Charlie.  I had to keep him inside for a few months until the fence was built in the backyard so coming home was always interesting to see what he had gotten up to during the day.

Looking back, maybe I should have restricted him in the house but NO, I gave him full rein and that hasn't changed!

The video was taken on my iphone so the quality isn't the best.

the one... with a birthday candle

It was Charlie's 2nd Birthday on the 24th January.

It's hard to believe it was almost 2 years ago that I drove to Kingaroy to pick him up.  He was just 8 weeks old and only 15cm tall.

the one... with a trip to the vet

Saturday morning saw me taking Charlie for his yearly check at the Vet.

It's funny how I book him in for his checkup but I don't do the same yearly task for myself.

Anyway, the vet said Charlie was in good health and even had a low rest in heart rate which meant he is a healthy dog who is very active.  Really, I didn't realise he was active!

The only thing is that he has a wheat infection in both ears.  Particularly the right one.  That means for the next 2 weeks I have to put drops in his ears, morning and night.  I better make sure I'm stocked up on his favourite treats.

Sunday morning while I was having breakfast on the verandah I was having a look around on pinterest and a particular photo caught my eye about emergency packs for your pet.

In light of the fires we've had recently in Australia and it was almost 2 years ago that Brisbane went under in the floods, I thought it might be a good idea.

The pin took me to a blog called A Bowl Full of Lemons and this post on Emergency Preparedness.  The plan is to put together a kit for myself and for Charlie.  Hopefully we never have to use them but I would rather know that are sitting there.... just in case.

the one... been feeling like crap

I know that isn't the nicest post title but it is how I have been feeling the last few days.

It all started last week with a sore throat which I managed to keep away with lots of hot water and lemon. That was until last Friday when the throat gave up the fight.  I laid low over the weekend and was feeling much better on Sunday night and was heading back to work in the morning.

Over night the cold took a different turn and for the past three days I've had what's felt like the worst hay fever attack that seems to never want to end.

I'm happy to say that last night I felt better and I'm heading back to work today.

Little Charlie has been wonderful, always snoozing with me and staying by my side.  I thanked him by taking him to the dog park yesterday afternoon where he had a great time.

I'm happy to say that posts will return to normal next week.

the one... with a trip to the vet

After a recent trip to visit family who live on acreage I did the usual tick check on Charlie when we got home and I'm happy to say I didn't find anything.

It was a couple of days later during a rumbling session I felt something and on closer inspection I found a tick.

Now it was dead when I found it but it was still in him so I grabbed the tweezers and pulled it out.  It so small, really it was the size of a pin head.  I didn't realise they were that small.

All seemed good until a couple of days later when I noticed a lump had formed where the tick was so I called the vet and made an appointment.

He doesn't mind going to the vet, why wouldn't he, he always gets treats and belly rubs.

The vet withdrew blood from the lump and then left the room to run a test....  waiting.... waiting...  She returns.

She found something.

She found some strange curved little things in the sample she took.  She didn't know what they were (great!) but assumed the tick had left a little bug in Charlie when it died.

It's funny, when she returned I was expecting her to say 'all clear' and it was a little strange when it wasn't.

Now it isn't serious.  Charlie is perfectly fine but we have him on antibiotics, half a tablet each morning and night for a couple of weeks and all should be good.

I've since been to the pet shop and picked up a tick collar ready for the next trip out to the acreage and a few extra treats.

I promised that I would introduce you to my little Charlie so here he is:

I was very luck to find Charlie on Adopt a Pet early last year.

He was just 8 weeks old at the time and only 15cm tall.

Seriously look at that adorable face, how could I not!

I saw his profile on the Tuesday night and phoned them up on Wednesday morning.  They told me his was scheduled to visit the vet that day for his shots and to be desexed.  They also told me their policy didn't allow them to hold him for me because I couldn't get there until Saturday!!  Ahhhh.  I had to wait until 3pm on Friday to call back and see if he was still there.

I tell you they were 3 very long days!

I counted down on Friday until 3pm and finally made the call.

He was still there and yes, they would hold him for me to come up on Saturday (I could relax).

When I say come up, I had to drive from Brisbane to Kingaroy which is a good 2.5 hours drive.  It was actually a really nice drive up and I knew that he was on hold for me.

When I got there the lady and I went to the kennels and she brought him out.  She held him in front of me for what seemed like ages when she finally asked if I wanted to hold him....  I was then covered with kisses and I was a goner.

I almost forgot to tell you, I had a name picked out but I didn't have to change it because they had already name him Charlie.  It was meant to be.

I can honestly say that having Charlie has changed my life and for the better.  He is such a lovely boy, very playful, affectionate and loves a nap on the weekends.

the one... with the doggy door

As the weather starts to get colder at night, I am less inclined to want to get up and take the puppy outside in the middle of the night.  I'm not one who likes her sleep interupted, even if it is for an adorable puppy.

I headed to my local Pet Barn store to pick up a doggy door for $119.  I then dropped in to borrow the jigsaw from my Dad so I could tackle the job.

The box had everything you needed including a template to outline where to cut.  The only part that was a bit tricky was using the jigsaw around the corners.  The whole house vibrated.

It only took a couple of days and a small supply of treats to get Charlie to use the door.  He was very unsure of the plastic flap at first but now he uses it every day!

The little white things on the floor are treats laid out to entice Charlie in.

I'm happy to say it was actually an easy project and well worth it.
